Stella Gibbons was a British author best known for her satirical novel “Cold Comfort Farm.” Born in London in 1902, Gibbons began her writing career as a journalist before publishing her first novel, “The Untidy Gnome,” in 1935. However, it was “Cold Comfort Farm,” published in 1932, that brought her widespread acclaim and is still considered her most famous work. The novel, which pokes fun at the rural romance genre, has been adapted into multiple films and stage productions. Gibbons went on to write over 20 novels, as well as poetry, short stories, and children’s books. She was awarded the Order of the British Empire in 1980 for her contributions to literature.
